Celebrating Global Wind Day
Fun facts about wind power and how to celebrate this clean energy source
Happy Father’s Day everyone!
June 15 also happens to be Global Wind Day: a celebration of the power of wind energy and the people who make it happen. From ancient sailboats to modern turbines, wind has always helped move us forward. Now, wind powers homes and businesses around the world, playing a major role in the global shift to clean energy. Wind is one of the fastest-growing sources of electricity and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, create green jobs, and preserve air quality.
Fun Facts About Wind Power
As early as 5,000 BC, Egyptians used wind energy to propel boats along the Nile River
One modern wind turbine can power over 1,500 homes for a year.
The world’s largest offshore wind farm, Hornsea 2 in the UK, can generate enough electricity to power 1.4 million homes.
Unlike fossil fuels, wind energy uses virtually no water — helping conserve one of our most precious resources.
China uses the most wind energy. In 2022 the country produced 36% of the total world wind electricity generation
Wind energy is now Canada’s second-largest source of renewable electricity, after hydro.
Ways to Celebrate #GlobalWindDay
Visit a wind farm: Many offer open houses or tours.
Fly a kite (also a fun Father’s Day activity).
Try a wind-themed craft or science experiment with kids (paper pinwheels, mini turbines, or windsocks).
Support wind innovation: Learn about Canadian companies developing bird-friendly and urban wind solutions.
Offset your electricity by choosing a green energy provider that includes wind in its mix.
Choose green power through your utility or a renewable energy provider.
Share a wind fact or photo and tag it #GlobalWindDay.
Now go fly a kite!
Yours for the Greener Good,
Brett
