When fear and conflict dominate the headlines, may these stories bring you hope.

Mobile technology helps protect Mountain Gorillas

Mobile software called the Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) is helping conservationists track wildlife and protect Mountain Gorillas in Central Africa. Conservationists use SMART to create maps, navigate patrol routes, upload sightings, and analyze data. Rangers can record signs of poaching, habitat damage, and wildlife sightings in real time, allowing managers to deploy patrols more efficiently. With improved law enforcement and decision making, Mountain Gorilla numbers have risen from 480 in 2010 to an estimated 1,063 today.

Learn more

Colombian activist helps halt fracking project

Environmental advocate Yuvelis Morales Blanco has won a Goldman Environmental Prize for stopping a proposed fracking project along Colombia’s Magdalena River, the country’s largest waterway. Working with grassroots groups and legal advocates, she helped secure court rulings recognizing the river’s legal rights and blocking pilot fracking operations that threatened drinking water, fisheries, and wetlands. The legal victory prevented exploratory fracking projects from moving forward and strengthened protections for ecosystems along a river that supports millions of people and extensive biodiversity.

Learn more

Colorado’s new wildlife overpass becomes the largest in North America

The new Greenland Wildlife Overpass in Colorado is now the largest wildlife overpass in North America. Built over Interstate 25 in Colorado, the overpass spans six lanes of interstate traffic, connecting 39,000 acres of habitat. It is strategically located to address the 3.7 mile gap from other wildlife crossings, helping animals like deer, elk, bears, and smaller species to move safely between habitats that were previously cut off by traffic. Projects like this have been shown to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions by up to 80–90%, while restoring migration routes and improving long-term genetic diversity in wildlife populations.

Learn more

Chernobyl exclusion zone becomes refuge for diverse wildlife

Forty years after the 1986 nuclear disaster, the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone has become a major refuge for wildlife, supporting populations of wolves, lynx, deer, wild boar, and rare species such as European Bison and Przewalski’s Horses. With human activity largely absent, forests and wetlands have regenerated, allowing ecosystems to recover. Studies show that wildlife populations in parts of the zone are comparable to or higher than those in surrounding regions, demonstrating large-scale ecosystem recovery despite the region’s history of contamination.

Learn more

Kigali undertakes massive wetland restoration project

Kigali, Rwanda, is undertaking the largest urban wetland restoration project in Africa. Five interconnected wetlands, spanning nearly 500 hectares, are being rehabilitated to reduce flooding, improve water quality, and support biodiversity. The project will help protect an estimated 220,500 people in flood-prone neighbourhoods while improving ecosystem health. These wetlands will also serve as urban parks, with linked pathways and learning hubs to provide environmental education. The project is expected to prevent $45–90 million in flood damage, create 7,500 jobs, and attract 1.5 million visitors annually in coming years.

<a Formerly a decommissioned plant nursery, the site has been transformed into a “micro-mosaic” of habitats, including ponds, wildflower meadows, and hedgerows. Royal Parks staff and more than 3,000 volunteers planted the entire two acres with 200,000 spring bulbs, 900 Blackthorn saplings, 4,500 plugs of climate-resilient sphagnum moss, and 40 tree species. According to WWF Mexico, monarchs occupied 2.93 hectares of forest this winter, up from 1.79 hectares the year before. This marks the largest monarch butterfly forest coverage since 2018, a result of conservation efforts such as habitat restoration and protection of overwintering forests.

Learn more

19 cities cut air pollution by more than 20%

New research by Breathe Cities shows that nineteen cities across Europe, North America and Asia reduced fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide by at least 20% since 2010, with some achieving reductions of nearly 45%. Pollution reduction was linked to measures like electrifying public transport, limiting polluting vehicles, and modernizing industry — demonstrating that sustained policy action can improve air quality within just 10 to15 years when cities take sustained action to reduce the biggest pollution sources.

Learn more

Researchers use algae to remove microplastics from water

Scientists have developed a new algae-based system that can remove more than 90% of microplastics from water in just one hour. It works using natural hydrophobic interactions — making microplastics stick to algal cells — so they clump together and can be removed from wastewater. The approach doesn’t just remove pollution — it converts the captured plastics into useful composites. By combining cleanup with recycling and resource production, the researchers describe the platform as a cost-effective and sustainable pathway that could help address microplastic pollution while creating new value from waste.

Learn more

Good News They are members of the Gitanyow community, which traditionally used fire to stimulate plant growth, attract wildlife, and prevent wildfires — until the practice was banned during colonization. Now, the BC Wildfire Service is working with Indigenous communities to implement cultural burns, with more than 30 projects slated for this spring.

Learn more

Beavers return to English landscape after 400-year absence

A family of Eurasian beavers has been released into the wild on the Southill Estate, where the species had been extinct for centuries. The animals are expected to restore wetlands by building dams that slow water flow and retain moisture in the landscape. Conservationists say the reintroduction will improve habitat diversity, boost biodiversity, and help reduce flooding and drought impacts over time.

Learn more

DNA tools help scientists restore climate-threatened ecosystems

Scientists are increasingly using genetic tools to guide conservation decisions, helping restore ecosystems more resilient to climate change. By studying the DNA of species such as eelgrass, researchers can identify strains better adapted to warming conditions and replant them in restoration projects. This emerging approach, known as conservation genomics, could dramatically improve the success of habitat restoration efforts.

Learn more

Greening vacant lots reduces crime in Philadelphia

Transforming abandoned lots into green spaces is helping make neighbourhoods safer across Philadelphia. Through a long-running program led by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, more than 12,000 neglected plots have been cleaned, planted, and maintained, turning once-blighted areas into community spaces. Research has shown that neighborhoods near these greened lots experienced a 29% drop in gun violence and a 21% reduction in burglary, along with improved mental health among residents.

Learn more

Danish millionaire buys farmland to restore nature

A Danish entrepreneur is using his personal wealth to buy up intensively farmed land and restore it to nature, transforming former crop fields into wetlands, forests, and wildflower meadows. Scientists aboard a research vessel spent 35 days exploring deep-sea habitats between 200 metres and 3 kilometres below the surface, identifying new sharks, rays, and a wide range of invertebrates such as sponges and brittle stars. Researchers say the discoveries highlight just how little we know about deep-ocean biodiversity and strengthen the case for protecting remote marine ecosystems from emerging threats like deep-sea mining.

Learn more

Canada’s announces new conservation strategy

Canada has unveiled a national conservation strategy that aims to expand protected areas across the country, including new national parks, marine conservation zones, and urban green spaces. Central to this plan is the goal of safeguarding 30% of Canada’s lands and waters by 2030. Special focus is being placed on wetlands critical for migratory birds. Protecting these habitats will help secure breeding and resting sites along major flyways, supporting species that travel thousands of kilometres annually and rely on healthy wetland ecosystems throughout their life cycles. Scientists and conservation groups agree that such a comprehensive strategy can safeguard vital habitats, restore salmon populations, improve biodiversity protection nationwide, and enhance the long-term survival rates of migratory birds.

Learn more

Bilby population booms in predator-free Australian reserve

A conservation breeding program has triggered a dramatic comeback for the vulnerable Greater Bilby in Mallee Cliffs National Park. Since the initial release of just 50 animals in 2019, the population has grown to roughly 1,840 individuals within a fenced predator-free zone. Motion cameras now detect Bilbies across most of the protected area, suggesting they are thriving and spreading naturally. Conservationists say the project shows how removing invasive predators and protecting habitat can allow threatened mammals to recover rapidly.

Learn more

Rare antelope returns to central India after nearly a century

The Blackbuck Antelope is making a remarkable comeback in parts of central India, where it had disappeared nearly 100 years ago. After reintroductions began in 2018, conservationists have now released about 130 blackbucks into the wild, with another 60 still being prepared for release. The animals are being monitored through camera traps and field patrols, and early results suggest the growing population is helping restore native grasslands by grazing in ways that support plant diversity. The project is being hailed as a strong example of how reintroduction programs can rebuild both species populations and ecosystems.

Learn more

Early wildlife activity shows signs of climate adaptation

Citizen-science records across the UK show that birds, butterflies, and plants are emerging earlier than usual this spring — sometimes weeks ahead of historic averages. While earlier seasonal timing can pose risks, researchers note that several species appear to be successfully adjusting their breeding and feeding cycles to match changing conditions. These observations provide evidence that some wildlife populations may be adapting to warming temperatures, offering important clues about resilience in a changing climate.

<a Their discoveries included a bright turquoise pit viper, a “flying” snake, and three geckos. Researchers explored dozens of caves, many never studied before, revealing ecosystems rich with unique and highly specialized life. Scientists say they have only scratched the surface of what remains unknown — and why protecting fragile cave habitats is critical before species are lost before they’re even discovered.

Learn more

Pine Marten spotted in southern England after near extinction

Trail cameras near Cornwall have recorded a Pine Marten — a species that has been absent for over a century. A nocturnal mammal related to weasels and otters, the Pine Marten was once common, but was almost hunted to extinction in the 18th and 19th centuries. Conservationists are “utterly staggered” by the sighting and say it’s a “positive sign that nature can be restored”. The return of this predator could help restore balance in woodland ecosystems, where the species plays an important role as a predator and seed disperser.

Learn more

Endangered Wild Bustard chick hatched in the wild using “foster egg” strategy

In a major breakthrough for one of the world’s rarest birds, a Great Indian Bustard chick has hatched in the wild — the first in a decade. The egg was laid at a captive breeding centre in Sam, Jaisalmer, transported for more than 700 km in a handheld incubator, and transferred to a wild nest in Gujarat. The chick hatched on March 26 and is now being raised by a wild female, marking a critical step toward rebuilding natural populations.

Learn more

Beavers transforming Dorset’s landscape

One year after being reintroduced in Dorset, beavers are dramatically reshaping the landscape: building dams, restoring wetlands, and creating habitat for a wide range of species. Their activity has slowed water flow, improved habitat complexity, and attracted wildlife including birds, amphibians, and mammals. Conservationists say the project is a powerful example of how reintroducing keystone species can kickstart ecosystem recovery.

Learn more

Global treaty expands protection for migratory species

More than 130 countries agreed to new protections for dozens of migratory species under the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species. Animals including cheetahs, sharks, and otters received stronger protections, with commitments to reduce threats and improve habitat connectivity. Conservationists say the agreement marks an important step toward coordinated global action for species that cross borders.

<a The Global Action Plan for Conservation of the Steppe Eagle spans dozens of countries along migratory routes and aims to improve monitoring, reduce threats, and protect habitats critical to the species’ survival. Coordinated global action could significantly improve outcomes for this majestic raptor, which is declining rapidly across much of its range.

Learn more

Scientists discover three new lizard species in Australia

Researchers in Queensland have identified three previously unrecognized lizard species: the Rainbow Rock Monitor (Varanus iridis), the Orange-headed Rock Monitor (Varanus umbra) and the Yellow-headed Rock Monitor (Varanus phosphoros). The discovery, made through genetic and physical analysis, shows these lizards diverged millions of years ago but were only now distinguished as separate species. Researchers see this discovery as an opportunity to learn more about, and protect, the yet understudied savannah habitat.

Learn more

Invasive ferrets eradicated from Rathlin Island

Northern Ireland’s Rathlin Island is finally ferret-free. These invasive predators were released in the 1980s to reduce the rabbit population, and have since wreaked havoc on ground-nesting seabirds. In 2021, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Northern Ireland (RSPB NI) established the LIFE Raft project to remove ferrets and give seabirds a chance to recover. Working together with the community, biologists set up thermal drones and cameras to detect animals, and Woody the labrador was trained to sniff them out. Live traps alerted staff and volunteers once as a ferret was caught, and the animals were humanely dispatched. The island ecosystem is already showing signs of recovery, with the return of vulnerable species like Corncrakes and Manx shearwaters.

Learn more

Farmers helping falcons helping farmers

In Michigan, cherry growers are ditching pesticides for a natural form of pest control: American Kestrels. North America’s smallest falcons, kestrels feed on rodents and fruit-eating birds, and they thrive in open areas with abundant prey. Farmers are attracting these predators by installing nest boxes and leaving patches of grassland habitat around orchards. In turn, kestrels are keeping fruit-loving critters in check; growers that have taken this approach have reported fewer vole sightings and less berry damage. Some have also noted an increase in songbird diversity — likely a result of a healthier insect population. Not only is this nature-based approach good for wildlife but it helps people by reducing exposure to harmful chemicals.

Learn more

Native seed farm helping restore habitat in California

A nonprofit farm in California’s Sacramento Valley is tackling a critical barrier to large-scale environmental restoration: the shortage of native seeds. Operated by River Partners, Heritage Growers cultivates locally adapted grasses, wildflowers, and shrubs whose genetics are adapted to specific regions. These seeds are already being used in major restoration efforts, helping stabilize soils, support pollinators, and reduce future fire risk. By scaling up production and sharing knowledge, the project is enabling faster, more effective habitat recovery across California.

<a May these bring you hope for a healing planet.

Philippine Eagle nest discovered in protected forest

Researchers in the Philippines have located a new nest of the critically endangered Philippine Eagle. Fewer than 392 breeding pairs remain in the wild. Conservationists have ramped up efforts to preserve these rare raptors since 2020, when a farmer accidentally shot one. Since then, the Philippine Eagle Foundation has been working together with Indigenous forest guards and the local government to conduct forest patrols and wildlife monitoring. It was during one of these surveys in 2025 that the new nest was discovered. Experts say the Philippine Eagle plays a vital ecological role as an apex predator, and its presence indicates a healthy forest.

Learn more

Angola wetland gains global protection

A vast watershed in southeastern Angola has been designated a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. The Ramsar site acts as a huge natural reservoir, supplying water to the region’s rivers, forests, and peatlands for more than 110,000 square kilometers. The area is home to various endemic fish and plant species, as well as Cheetahs, Lions, African Wild Dogs, and Giant Sable Antelopes.

Learn more

Rare frogfish raised from egg to juvenile

Scientists at Shedd Aquarium have successfully raised a Warty Frogfish from egg to juvenile for the first time, marking a breakthrough in marine animal care and research. Thousands of larvae hatched, but one survived through five months of careful monitoring of water conditions, lighting, and feeding. The achievement provides valuable insights into the species’ early life stages and could help support captive-breeding efforts for delicate or rarely studied marine species.

Learn more

Two Great Indian Bustard chicks hatch

Conservationists working on India’s Project Great Indian Bustard have successfully hatched two new chicks — one from natural breeding and another using artificial insemination. The births bring the captive population of this critically endangered bird to around 70 individuals. Scientists plan to soft-release captive-bred birds into the wild, a key step toward rebuilding wild populations of one of the world’s rarest birds.

Learn more

Research shows plants evolve rapidly to survive drought

A long-term study led by researchers at Cornell University found that populations of the Scarlet Monkeyflower rapidly evolved genetic traits that allowed them to survive a severe multi-year drought in California. Scientists tracked populations for more than a decade and identified genetic changes linked to drought tolerance, providing the first clear real-world documentation of “evolutionary rescue”— when a species adapts quickly enough to avoid extinction. The work suggests that genetic diversity may help some species withstand climate change if populations remain large and connected.

<a In many cultures, women are the keepers of traditional ecological knowledge, possessing a holistic understanding of ecosystem health. Women frequently lead grassroots environmental movements and play an important role in conservation and climate action. And, as new research shows, conservation efforts are more successful when women are included. Yet we remain underrepresented in environmental leadership, making up less than a third of the global STEM workforce and holding a fraction of senior climate and conservation decision-making roles.

The good news is, the tide is shifting. The stories below show both the progress being made to bridge the gender gap and why we need more women leading conservation efforts.

Island restoration helping seabirds recover

Conservationists working on the remote Pacific sanctuary of Palmyra Atoll are restoring habitat for nesting seabirds by removing invasive species and rebuilding native ecosystems. Led by bird conservationist Kayla Baker, the team monitors seabird populations and studies how the island’s food web responds as ecosystems recover. Early results show seabird colonies rebounding as habitat conditions improve, demonstrating how targeted restoration can help revive fragile island ecosystems.

Learn more

Research shows women improve conservation efforts

A global analysis led by researchers at the University of Queensland reviewed dozens of wildlife management projects across five continents and found that conservation efforts are more successful when women are actively involved. The study found that women often contribute unique ecological knowledge and community perspectives that improve species protection, habitat restoration, and anti-poaching efforts. Researchers say the findings highlight the importance of including women in conservation leadership and fieldwork to achieve stronger biodiversity outcomes.

Learn more

Women scientists protect crocodiles in the Everglades

Researchers known as the “Croc Docs” at University of Florida are leading hands-on conservation work to study and protect the endangered American crocodile in Everglades National Park. The team conducts nighttime surveys by airboat, monitors nesting sites, and tracks crocodile populations to better understand how the species is recovering after decades of decline. Their research provides key data to wildlife managers working to protect critical habitat and ensure the long-term survival of the species in South Florida.

Learn more

New grants address link between conservation and gender-based violence

The International Union for Conservation of Nature has launched new grants and guidance through its RISE Challenge to address the often-overlooked connection between environmental protection and gender-based violence. The initiative will support projects that promote safer working conditions for women environmental defenders and strengthen community programs that link conservation with gender equity.

Learn more

$1 Million funding for women-led climate solutions

Daughters for Earth has announced $1 million in new funding to support 43 women-led climate initiatives around the world. Kakapos live between 60 to 90 years and don’t breed until their teens — and only every 2-4 years when rimu trees mast (produce fruit). This year’s plentiful harvest has prompted increased mating activity and nest preparation. Conservationists managing the intensive recovery program say the synchronized food supply is crucial for chick survival, offering renewed hope for a species whose population once fell to just 51 individuals.

Learn more

Azores upholds protections in Marine Protected Area

The Azores has successfully dodged a proposal that would have weakened protections within its new Azores Marine Protected Areas Network, which safeguards 30% of Azorean waters. The network consists of 63 individual MPAs, divided evenly into “highly” protected and “fully” protected zones. On January 15, the Azores Parliament voted to maintain the fishing ban in fully protected areas, while pole-and-line tuna fishing will be allowed in the highly protected areas. The animals will stay in quarantined enclosures until they have acclimatized and are ready to be released into the wild. Through Project Cheetah, the relocation aims to re-establish a free-ranging Cheetah population decades after the species disappeared from India. Wildlife officials say the carefully managed transfer and monitoring program represents a landmark conservation collaboration and a major step toward restoring an endangered species to its historic range. India’s Cheetah population now numbers 48 cheetahs, including 28 India-born cubs.

Learn more

Rare turtles and Gharials Released in Una

In a boost for freshwater biodiversity, 25 baby Three-Striped Roof Turtles and 53 young Gharial were released into the Una River in Madhya Pradesh. Named the Peach Creek Woods Nature Sanctuary, the sanctuary will be permanently protected, even as the region grows. The woodland provides essential habitat for breeding and resident birds and helps keep the San Jacinto River watershed healthy. This is Houston Audubon’s 18th sanctuary, bringing the total land it manages to over 4,300 acres along the Upper Texas Coast. The sanctuary should open to the public in early 2027, once improvements are made. The land was donated by the late conservationist Thomas Lee Maddux.

Learn Enjoy!

Gentle giants return to the Carpathians

European Bison are once again roaming the Carpathian Mountains of southwestern Romania. Driven to extinction in the wild in the early 20th century, the animals survived only in captivity before coordinated breeding and reintroduction programs helped rebuild their numbers. In 2012, Rewilding Europe worked with WWF Romania and the Municipality of Armeniș to release herds into the Tarcu Mountains, where they have 150,000 hectares to roam free. Bison play a vital ecological role by adding nutrients to soil, dispersing seeds, and boosting biodiversity. The initiative also supports local communities through eco-tourism and renewed cultural pride in Europe’s largest land mammal.

Learn more

EU bans destruction of unsold fashion

The European Union has adopted new rules prohibiting companies from destroying unsold textiles and footwear, a major step toward curbing waste in the fashion industry. Under the updated Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, large companies will be banned from discarding unsold clothes and shoes, with transparency requirements forcing businesses to report how many products they throw away. The measure aims to reduce the environmental toll of overproduction and fast fashion, encouraging reuse, recycling, and more durable product design. Smaller companies will have more time to comply, but the policy signals a sweeping shift toward circular economy principles across the EU.

Learn more

Banteng airlifted to safety in Cambodia

Conservationists have translocated 16 critically endangered banteng — wild cattle native to Southeast Asia — to the Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary in northeast Cambodia. Using helicopters to move the animals from isolated forest patches threatened by poaching and habitat loss, the team aimed to boost genetic diversity and improve long-term survival prospects. The carefully coordinated operation marks a significant milestone for Cambodia’s wildlife recovery efforts, as banteng numbers have plummeted across their range. By establishing a more secure breeding population within a protected area, the species might have a fighting chance.

Learn more

Kenya launches Africa’s first National Carbon Registry

Kenya has launched Africa’s first National Carbon Registry, a digital platform designed to track carbon credits and ensure transparency in climate finance. The registry will record carbon projects and transactions, helping to prevent double counting and boost investor confidence as the country expands its role in global carbon markets. Officials say the system strengthens accountability and positions Kenya as a leader in climate governance, aligning with its broader commitments under the Paris Agreement. By formalizing how carbon credits are issued and traded, the registry aims to attract green investment while supporting emissions reductions and sustainable development.

Learn more

Japan’s underwater sculpture for sea life

A 40-tonne sculpture named Gaia has been installed beneath the waters of Tokunoshima, Japan, where it is designed to evolve into a thriving artificial reef. Created to support marine restoration, the submerged artwork provides structure for corals, fish, and other sea life to colonize over time. Rather than remaining a static installation, the sculpture is intended to be gradually reclaimed by nature, blending art and conservation beneath the waves. As marine ecosystems face mounting pressures from climate change and overfishing, projects like this highlight innovative ways artists and environmentalists are collaborating to restore ocean biodiversity.

Learn more

Good News The critically endangered whales have faced intense pressure from ship strikes, fishing gear entanglements, and climate-driven food shifts, making this news especially encouraging. Conservation groups say the rebound reflects years of protective measures and monitoring, though continued vigilance remains essential for the long-term survival of the species.

Learn more

Scottish Parliament passes law to protect swifts

Scotland has passed new legislation requiring “swift bricks” in certain new buildings to provide nesting habitat for the Common Swift (Apus apus). The legislation also aims to support other cavity-nesting birds that use these bricks, including house martins, starlings, and house sparrows. Swifts rely on nesting sites in buildings, many of which have disappeared due to modern construction and renovations. Conservationists say the low-cost measure could make a meaningful difference, embedding biodiversity protection directly into the built environment.

Learn more

Tunisia turns invasive crab into valuable export

In Tunisia, a conservation initiative has transformed the invasive Blue Crab (Portunus segnis) into a sustainable export product. The crab shredded traditional fishing nests — and the livelihood of fishermen — devouring their catch. Realizing they couldn’t eradicate the species, locals figured out how to commodify it. By creating local markets and international demand, the program helps control crab populations while generating income for fishing communities.

Learn more

Land snail thought extinct now thrives in Bermuda

The Greater Bermuda snail (Poecilozonites bermudensis), a tiny land snail once believed extinct, is now thriving again in Bermuda. The successful recovery highlights how targeted intervention and persistence can bring even the rarest species back from the brink.

Learn more

Artificial reef structures restore Cambodia’s marine life

New artificial reef structures off Cambodia’s coast are helping revive damaged marine ecosystems by providing habitat for fish, corals, and other sea life. May this bring some hope and inspiration for the week ahead.

Mexico’s Jaguar population has increased

In Mexico, the third National Jaguar Census reports that the number of wild jaguars has climbed to over 5,300, a substantial increase compared with previous counts. This growth is a result of expanded protected areas, improved monitoring methods like motion-sensor cameras, and greater engagement from researchers and local communities. Despite progress, however, experts caution that jaguars remain at risk, and sustained conservation action will be necessary for the species to reach stable, long-term numbers.

Learn more

Scotland introduces landowner biodiversity legislation

Scotland has introduced innovative landowner biodiversity legislation requiring large estate owners to create and publicly share detailed plans outlining how they will restore nature, address climate change risks, and reduce emissions on their properties. The law reflects a shift toward recognizing private land management as a matter of public environmental interest, with expectations that formal regulations will follow soon and help reverse biodiversity decline across the Scottish countryside.

Learn more

Kentucky communities unite on climate plan

In central Kentucky, urban and rural leaders from six counties are collaborating on a regional climate action plan designed to bolster local climate resilience and cut greenhouse gas emissions—despite the state’s reputation for climate skepticism. Supported by an EPA grant, the draft plan sets specific regional goals to reduce emissions by 23% by 2035 and 40% by 2050 compared to 2021 levels, and it includes initiatives like expanding electric vehicle charging, boosting solar adoption, and strengthening urban tree cover. This cross-community effort challenges assumptions about rural opposition to climate action and highlights how local governments can work together on environmental strategies tailored to their diverse needs.

Learn more

Thai researcher turns durian peel waste into textile fibre

A researcher at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand has found a new way to turn durian peels, which are a common type of agricultural waste in the country, into valuable and sustainable textile fibre. This new material is more breathable than silk and has natural antibacterial properties. It has already been used in fashion and lifestyle products under a new brand and has received recognition at a national research expo. By changing a major waste product into a useful resource, this innovation helps support a circular economy, reduces the environmental impact of burning or dumping fruit waste, and creates new opportunities for eco-friendly manufacturing and design.

Learn more

Chile cancels plans for hydrogen plant near observatory

A major planned green hydrogen and ammonia production project in Chile’s Atacama Desert — initially proposed as a large renewable energy hub — has been canceled by the developer, AES Andes. The decision follows rising concerns from the global astronomical community that building the facility close to the Paranal Observatory would harm the extremely dark skies and sensitive research equipment crucial for astronomical observations. While Chile remains committed to advancing renewable energy and green hydrogen innovation, this move underscores the challenge of balancing clean energy development with protecting scientific and natural assets.

Learn Photo: Brett Tryon

As you may know by now, I’m a bird lover. So I’m always happy when one of the stories I find has to do with bird conservation. Even better, when it features a bird I have photographed. This feature image is a male Prothonotary Warbler at his nest at Point Pelee National Park in Ontario. This is one of the only nesting sites for this endangered species — which is one of the only warblers (besides the Lucy’s Warbler) that nests in tree cavities. It’s perhaps my favourite species, and I was thrilled to visit the park in 2023 at a time when this pair had established their nest. This good dad was bringing insects to his partner and paused a few seconds before flying off to hunt some more. What a moment to witness, capture, and finally share with you.

Why this photo? The first story I’m featuring is about a man in Ontario who has devoted more than 40 years to building and monitoring nest boxes — including those for Prothonotary Warblers. Being that I’m a birder and from Ontario, I was surprised I hadn’t heard about him before — and amazed by how he has singlehandedly helped these birds rebound. In these tragic times, it warms my heart to know that there are kind souls like this who are selflessly doing their part for nature. And now I’m inspired to put up my own nest boxes this spring.

I hope this issue brings you some hope and inspiration as well. As poet poet Emily Dickinson said, hope is the thing with feathers.

Ontario man receives Governor General’s award for bird conservation

In Haldimand, Ontario, Don Wills has been awarded a prestigious Meritorious Service Decoration from the Governor General of Canada for helping two endangered bird species. For the last 40 years, Wills has built and maintained more than 500 Eastern Bluebird nest boxes along a trail spanning 50 miles. In 1997 he set out to help Prothonotary Warblers, when there were only 10 pairs remaining in Canada. Because this species only nests in natural tree cavities made by chickadees or woodpeckers, he designed a nest box that mimics a hollowed-out tree trunk. He set these up in swamp forests near Long Point, to great success. Wills has tracked — and been responsible for — over 20,00 bluebird hatchlings, and 436 baby warblers.

Learn more

MGM Resorts hits solar milestone in Las Vegas

MGM Resorts International has achieved a major sustainability milestone by powering up to 100% of its daytime electricity needs on the Las Vegas Strip. In December 2025, the company began receiving 115 MW of solar energy and 400 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage from the newly operational Escape Solar and Storage Project located in Lincoln County, Nevada. Paired with its existing Mega Solar Array, the system delivers 115 MW of clean power and 400 MWh of storage, allowing the company to capture peak solar energy and use it beyond daylight hours. After more than 15 years of negotiations, the treaty reached the threshold of 60 national ratifications on September 19, 2025. The agreement creates the first legally binding global framework to protect biodiversity in international waters. It allows countries to establish marine protected areas and requires environmental impact assessments for activities such as fishing and seabed mining. The treaty supports the global goal of protecting 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030, with more than 80 countries having ratified it so far.

Learn more

Long Island Sound’s ‘dead zones’ hit historic low

In 2025, low-oxygen “dead zones” in Long Island Sound reached their smallest size in nearly 40 years. The affected area shrank to about 18 square miles, down from much larger zones seen in past decades. Officials attribute the improvement to long-term investments in wastewater treatment and reductions in nitrogen pollution. The cleaner water is creating better conditions for fish and marine life, with recent sightings of dolphins highlighting early signs of ecological recovery.

Learn more

2026 Tyler Prize awarded to Dr. Toby Kiers

The 2026 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement was awarded to Dr. Toby Kiers for her groundbreaking research on underground fungal networks. Her work shows how mycorrhizal fungi support soil health, biodiversity, and carbon storage. Often called the “Nobel Prize for the Environment,” the award recognizes her efforts to map and protect these hidden ecosystems. The prize ceremony will take place on April 23, 2026, in Amsterdam.

Learn more

AI weather forecasting predicts monsoons in India

A study published in Nature Climate Change in early 2026 describes an AI-based weather model that improves predictions of monsoons in India. The system provides forecasts several weeks in advance, offering valuable lead time for farmers and local planners. More accurate predictions can help reduce crop losses and improve preparedness for extreme weather. The research highlights how artificial intelligence can strengthen climate adaptation in vulnerable regions.

Learn more

Rewilding site in England sees 900% increase in birds

The Knepp Estate in Sussex, England, has recorded a roughly 900% increase in breeding birds after two decades of rewilding. The former 3,500-acre farm stopped intensive agriculture and allowed natural processes to restore the land. Populations of rare species such as Nightingales and Turtle Doves have rebounded, along with many insects and other wildlife. The results show how rewilding can rapidly boost biodiversity at scale.

Learn The program, which began on January 5, 2025, charges drivers $9 to enter Manhattan below 60th Street during peak travel times.

27 million fewer vehicles entered the zone, resulting in an 11 percent reduction in traffic and 22% less air pollution. With fewer cars clogging streets, buses can get around more quickly, making public transit more appealing; local bus trips are up by 8.4%, and subway trips entering the zone are up 9%. Less traffic has also made streets safer, with a 7% decline in crashes and 8% less traffic-related injuries. Cleaner, safer streets have encouraged more pedestrians to visit, with foot traffic up 3.4%. The program has generated roughly $550 million in revenue.

Learn more

France’s ban on forever chemicals comes into force

France has brought into force one of Europe’s most comprehensive bans on PFAS, the “forever chemicals” linked to serious health and environmental risks. PFAS are now prohibited in products such as cosmetics, clothing, ski wax, and some consumer goods, with further restrictions planned. The move positions France as a global leader in tackling chemical pollution and reflects growing momentum to regulate substances that contaminate water, soil, and wildlife.

Learn more

Underwater “hotels” near Guam contain 20 new species

Coral reefs deeper than 100 meters have traditionally been difficult to study — until now. In 2018, researchers deployed a series of autonomous reef monitoring structures (ARMS) off the coast of Guam. Dubbed “underwater hotels,” ARMS are made of stacks of PVC plates with nooks and crannies where sea creatures can make their homes. In November 2025, they collected 13 of them and spent two weeks analyzing their contents. Among the 2,000 specimens collected, there were 100 species never recorded in the region, and 20 species previously unknown to science. The units also recorded temperature data, which showed evidence of a steady warming trend. Scientists hope that knowledge of the biodiversity and temperature of the twilight zone will inform conservation efforts.

Learn more

Women restore forest in Thailand

In Ban Pong village in northern Thailand, a women-led community group has transformed degraded farmland into a thriving 40-hectare community forest through hands-on restoration and fire prevention. Beginning in 2007, the women planted native trees, built more than 300 small check dams to retain water and soil, and organized dry-season patrols, firebreaks, and early warning systems to stop wildfires before they spread. Their work has kept the forest largely fire-free, improved air quality, allowed wildlife to return, and restored year-round water sources. With healthy soil and water, locals can also earn a living through fishing and harvesting of mushrooms and other forest foods.

Learn more

Whale-safe crab fishing in the U.S.

Each year, Humpback, Blue, and Gray whales travel thousands of miles to breed in coastal waters, where they face the risk of becoming entangled in vertical fishing lines used to anchor crab traps. But researchers are finding ways to make crab fishing safer for whales. The main innovation is ropeless crab gear, which keeps vertical lines and buoys on the seafloor until fishers retrieve their traps. These technologies are being tested alongside seasonal fishing restrictions that limit crabbing when whales are most abundant.

<a Enjoy the first post of 2026!

Atlantic Salmon return to English rivers

Young Atlantic salmon, which are critically endangered in Britain, have been spotted in three English rivers for the first time since 2015. Their numbers plummeted because of climate change, pollution, invasive species, and dams. These latest sightings are a hopeful sign that efforts to clean up waterways, improve water quality, and restore habitats are paying off. Conservationists say the return of salmon, which are highly sensitive to pollution, signals broader ecological recovery across these river systems.

Learn more

Free buses transform a French city

In the French city of Dunkirk, free public buses have reshaped daily life. Mayor Patrice Vergriete, who has a doctorate in urban planning, pledged during his election to make buses free. The city underwent the transition from 2014 to 2018, and today there are 150 free buses running seven days a week across 18 routes. Since the program was implemented, ridership surged, car use declined, and residents reported improved access to jobs, education, and social life. The policy has helped reduce congestion and emissions while supporting low-income households. It serves as an excellent model for New York City, where Mayor Mamdani is looking to do the same.

Learn more

Rare Amur tigress spotted with five cubs

Camera traps in northeast China have captured the first-ever footage of an Amur tigress caring for five cubs — an extraordinary and encouraging sight for one of the world’s most endangered big cats. The rare observation suggests improving habitat conditions and successful conservation measures in the region, offering renewed hope for the long-term survival of the species.

Learn more

New York expands polystyrene foam ban

New York State has expanded its ban on polystyrene foam to include containers used for cold storage, closing a major loophole in earlier regulations. The move aims to reduce plastic pollution, protect waterways, and limit exposure to harmful chemicals, while encouraging businesses to shift toward reusable or compostable alternatives.

Learn more

Scientists make hydrogen from dirty water

Researchers have developed a method to produce clean hydrogen fuel using wastewater, turning an environmental liability into a valuable energy resource. The process avoids the need for purified water and could lower costs and emissions associated with hydrogen production. If scaled up, the technology could support cleaner energy systems while helping address water pollution.

Learn more

My Favourite Solar Stories of 2025

Solar power has been lighting the way toward climate action and energy independence. Image: Sun Studios, Pixabay

I hope your year is off to a wonderful start. Like many, I take this time to reflect on the past year — and that has included looking back at the stories I featured in my weekly Good News post. I’ve spent the last few days trying to pick my top ten favourites, but it’s not easy! It’s hard enough to pick five each week, but choosing from 180 stories over the last 36 issues is impossible. So I’ve decided to break down my favourites into categories.

I’m starting with solar power because there were so many solar stories that caught my attention this year. Solar is being used in some really innovative ways, from art installations to mobile energy to balcony solar panels. And it’s being deployed in some of the most remote communities to promote energy independence, create jobs, and improve air quality. So let me shine a light on my favourite solar stories from 2025.

World’s largest solar mural powers Canadian building

A new installation in Edmonton, Alberta, has combined art and clean energy to create the world’s largest solar panel mural. The installation covers an apartment building with 400 solar panels, producing enough electricity to offset 150 tons of CO₂ annually — equivalent to taking 32 cars off the road. Designed by local artists and supported by the city’s sustainability fund, it’s a striking example of how public art and renewable energy can coexist beautifully.

Learn more

Malawi village now 100% solar

Kasakula Village in rural Malawi has achieved a major milestone: 100 percent solar energy access for all homes, schools, and clinics. The project, led by the charity SolarAid, replaces costly and polluting kerosene lighting and candles with clean, reliable solar power. Residents report better school performance, safer nighttime conditions, and thriving small businesses. SolarAid is now working with the government to expand the project to other parts of the country.

Learn more

Over a million Germans using balcony solar

Germany has now surpassed one million “Balkonkraftwerke,” plug-and-play balcony solar systems that allow apartment dwellers to generate their own clean energy simply by plugging solar panels into a wall outlet. New policies make it easier for tenants to install these systems without landlords stopping them, helping drive rapid adoption. Affordable, easy to set up, and capable of producing up to 760 kWh per year, the devices are cutting household emissions and lowering electricity bills.

Learn more

Indigenous-owned solar project underway in B.C.

The Anahim Lake Solar Project in British Columbia is set to become Canada’s largest off-grid solar farm, providing clean energy to the Ulkatcho First Nation and significantly reducing their reliance on diesel power. Indigenous-owned and supported by BC Hydro’s first-ever Community Electricity Purchase Agreement, this initiative marks a major step forward in sustainable energy and environmental stewardship on Traditional Territory.

With construction underway and completion planned for October 2025, the project includes advanced microgrid upgrades and battery storage for reliable power distribution.

Learn more

England’s mandates solar panels on new homes

By 2027, nearly all new homes built in England must include solar panels. The new policy, which aims to reduce emissions and lower energy bills, will legally require builders to install rooftop solar during construction. While initial construction costs will rise by £3,000–£4,000 per home, homeowners are expected to save at least £1,000 annually. The government also plans to offer grants and loans to retrofit existing homes with solar panels, reinforcing its commitment to net-zero goals.

Learn more

California’s first solar-covered canal now online

California has brought online its first solar-covered canal as part of a Project Nexus, a pilot project in the Turlock Irrigation District that builds platforms of solar panels over irrigation canals. The method both cools the solar panels and shades the canals, reducing evaporation. The 1.6-megawatt system represents a growing trend of pairing infrastructure with renewable energy, with hopes to reduce electricity costs for irrigation and advance water-conscious clean energy deployment in agriculture.

Learn more

Nunavut community switching to solar power

The Inuit hamlet of Naujaat is flipping the switch from diesel to solar. An array of 2,500 solar panels will power about 60% of the community, reduce diesel consumption by 30% and cut emissions by about 30,000 tonnes over the next 30 years. The project has also helped create local jobs. Residents look forward to turning off their noisy diesel generators and experiencing the silence that their ancestors once did.

Medicine Hat turning former industrial site into a solar park

The city of Medicine Hat, Alberta, is repurposing a former industrial site into the Saamis Solar Park — a 325-megawatt solar project that will provide clean, renewable electricity to the region. With Medicine Hat boasting 330 days of sunshine a year — more than any other Canadian city — the location couldn’t be any better.

Once complete, this will be one of the largest solar installations in Canada, supplying power to thousands of homes while reducing carbon emissions. The project highlights a growing trend of transforming underused industrial land into productive, climate-positive infrastructure.

Learn more

U.S. building its first solar-powered steel mill

Pacific Steel Group is building the first solar-powered steel mill in the U.S., located in California’s Mojave Desert. The facility will produce up to 450,000 tons of rebar each year using mainly on-site solar and wind energy, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by about 370,000 tons annually—similar to removing 75,000 cars from the road. With advanced pollution controls and energy-efficient technologies, the mill aims to further limit its environmental footprint and is expected to reach full capacity by 2027.

The project will create nearly 450 jobs, support local recycling, and reduce energy costs through renewable power. Backed by $30 million in state tax credits, it sets a positive example for sustainable manufacturing in heavy industry.

Learn more

Energy storage train brings clean energy to communities that need it

SunTrain, a Denver-based company, has introduced a mobile energy storage train system that transports electricity in battery-powered railcars across existing railways. Each railcar can store enough electricity to power thousands of homes and transport it to urban centres without building costly new transmission lines. By using the vast U.S. freight rail network, this system can be deployed immediately.

The company has completed successful prototypes and is planning a large-scale pilot project in Colorado, connecting wind and solar farms to a former coal plant. With significant funding and a long list of potential projects, SunTrain’s innovation could help utilities replace fossil fuel plants and manage renewable energy more efficiently, all while reducing costs and pollution.

Learn more

Indigenous-Owned Solar Located in Anahim Lake, B.C., the 3.8-megawatt solar installation will produce clean and renewable energy for the Ulkatcho First Nation, which currently relies on diesel for power. This project will reduce the need for diesel generation by about 64%, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality.

The Anahim Lake Solar Project is 100% Indigenous owned. In April 2024, BC Hydro signed its first-ever Community Electricity Purchase Agreement (CEPA) with Ulkatcho Energy Corporation (UEC), a member of Ulkatcho First Nation’s Ulkatcho Group of Companies (UGoC). Through this agreement, BC Hydro will purchase solar energy generated at Anahim Lake Solar Farm for the next 20 years.

“I am honoured to be involved in this great initiative,” says Chief Charlie Williams of the Ulkatcho First Nation. “Since my first meeting with BC Hydro five years ago, this project has come a long way and will have a very positive impact on our community. Through our Ulkatcho Group of Companies, we are giving our people a cleaner environment and preserving our lands through reducing greenhouse gas emissions on our Traditional Territory.”

The solar farm is being built on industrial land of an old sawmill site. To efficiently store and distribute the power it generates, BC Hydro is upgrading the Anahim Lake Station Microgrid. A new control system will transition operations from analog to digital, and batteries will store surplus energy generated during the day, ensuring reliable power supply after the sun goes down.

Chris O’Riley, President and CEO of BC Hydro, emphasizes the importance of collaborating with First Nations to deliver this leading-edge technology:

“Our collaboration with Ulkatcho Energy Corporation not only sets the foundation for future partnerships with First Nations across the province but also underscores BC Hydro’s commitment to supporting Indigenous-led clean energy initiatives — ensuring reliable, sustainable power for generations to come.”

The project also includes the construction of new access roads, a control and monitoring facility, site fire management, signage, and security. Construction is expected to be completed in October 2025.

Quebec Town Fined for Destroying Nest of a Threatened Songbird

Mowing the grass cost the municipality $30,000. Photo: Getty Images

The Court of Quebec has fined the Ville de Longueuil $30,000 for violating the Species at Risk Act, after destroying at least one Bobolink nest.

The Bobolink (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) is a medium sized songbird in the blackbird family. Breeding males have distinct plumage: mostly black with a white back and yellow nape, they look like they are wearing backwards tuxedos. Females are buffy brown with dark streaking, plumage that helps them camouflage while nesting. Bobolinks nest on the ground in grasslands — habitat that is shrinking due to agriculture, overgrazing, and development.

“Although grasslands are important for our climate, as a carbon sink, and for biodiversity, they are among the most endangered and least formally protected ecosystems on the planet,” says Andrew Coughlan, Associate Director for Québec and the Atlantic at Birds Canada.

More than 25% of the world’s Bobolink population breeds in Canada, where the species is listed as Threatened under Schedule 1 of the Species at Risk Act. It is also protected by the Migratory Bird Convention Act.

“The species has suffered severe population declines since the early 1980s,” explains Coughlan, “And the declines have continued in recent years, particularly in Eastern Canada, where the bulk of the Canadian breeding population occurs.”

Although Bobolinks are typically associated with hayfields, they will nest anywhere with suitable grassy areas — which leaves them vulnerable to mowing. What happened in the Ville de Longueuil serves as a stark example: In July 2024, an individual reported witnessing city staff mow over a bobolink nesting site at Parc des Sorbiers. Enforcement officers subsequently launched an investigation, which determined that the Ville de Longueuil was indeed responsible for damaging or destroying at least one bobolink nest. The municipality pleaded guilty to one count of violating the Species at Risk Act.

Coughlan says the ruling highlights the fact that Bobolinks are protected by law in Canada, and there are real consequences if they are harmed.

“It also shows municipalities and landowners that citizens are concerned about and are willing to act as sentinels for local birds and nature,” he adds.

The Ville de Longueuil has indicated that it has already modified its maintenance routine for certain areas, delaying mowing until after July 15 — when the Bobolink is finished nesting. This is one of the measures recommended in the proposed Bobolink Recovery Strategy.

“This is a great step towards protecting this species during the nesting season,” says Coughlan.

Other measures could include training staff to identify nest habitats and conducting ecological surveys in green spaces. If a late active nest is discovered, staff should leave a buffer zone of at least 10 meters around the nest.

While this ruling is a win for the Bobolink, agricultural practices continue to threaten many grassland species. Mowing hayfields before nesting is complete, overgrazing, and pesticide use need to be addressed. Saving Bobolinks will require conserving grasslands and educating farmers to delay mowing, use rotational grazing, and avoid pesticide use. These practices can be encouraged through stewardship programs that offer financial incentives for preserving habitat.

For now, the fine serves as a precedent and will hopefully encourage other landowners to ensure that routine activities, such as mowing, include measures to protect vulnerable grassland species like the Bobolink.
